Chair Edit
When I’m researching chairs for a home project, I focus on the details that make each piece unique and functional. Here are my industry top chair picks, emphasizing shape, minimal upholstery, wood details, and thoughtful fabric choices.
Key Decisions Before Selecting a Chair
Measurements - grab a tape measure and write down the dimensions where the chair will be placed - (height, width, and depth.) you’ll want at least 18” clear min. around around 30” for a walking path on one side too.
Intended Use - Consider the chair’s purpose: lounge, dining, accent, or office? who will be using the chair (e.g., adults, kids, pets).
Silhouette - Consider the overall style and how it fits with existing furniture. traditional, modern, barrel, wingback, etc.
Fabric Type - Choose between different fabrics: velvet, leather, performance fabric, etc. Consider durability and maintenance based on the chair’s usage.
Comfort - comfort level: check the seat height, depth, and back support. Look for features like cushioned seats and armrests.
Design Details - Decide on color or pattern that match or complement your décor (some vendors offer fabric swatches that can be delivered to your home) Look for unique design elements: wood details, metal accents, or upholstery trim.
Construction - Check the chair’s frame material: wood, metal, or a combination. Look for high-quality construction methods and materials.
Budget - Determine your budget range for the chair. Balance between quality, design, and affordability.
Placement - Consider if the chair will be stationary or frequently moved. Look for lightweight designs or chairs with mobility features like casters.
Additional Features - know if you need additional features like swivel bases or reclining mechanisms. Consider options for modular designs or multi-functional use. really any key words that will help you narrow your search down.
Note*measure your space before committing!
What criteria is important to me when selecting an accent chair?
Shape and Silhouette
I look for eye-catching chair design and depending on your style it could lean traditional with craftsmanship and wood detailing or it could be bold and colorful if your style leans more bohemian or contemporary. I also think about how you will use the chair arm’s vs armless. Chairs with arms can be great for comfortable sitting, reading or chatting with friends. While armless can help fill a tight space, give you an extra spot for hosting or be a great place to get ready and put your shoes on.
Noelle Modular Sofa The Noelle modular sofa for example can be used as a generous armchair for relaxed seating, with it’s rich velvet upholstery and aged Oak veneer sides with a burl finish. Inspired by 1970s interiors, its statement curved shape adds a touch of vintage charm.
Upholstery
Upholstery is of course a big topic of chair selection. Fabric or leather should be durable and you should think about who will be using the space (childern, pets..) to avoid staining or pulls. I touch on this in more detail below but full upholstery armchairs infuse comfort into any space design and you can really add style with your fabric selection.
Havana Occasional Swivel Chair In Highland Smoke And Toasted Burl - A traditional barrel shape with a modern twist with a wood burl back. This chair a swivel for added functionality. The tight, tailored sit offers both comfort and style as well as performance fabric.
Details and Finishes
I like to look at the chair’s details on the vendors website under product details. I check for solid wood frames or hardwood vs veneer to check for durability.

Fabric Choices
Think about who will be using the chair and choose the fabric accordingly. For high-traffic areas or homes with kids and pets, performance fabrics are ideal. For a luxurious touch in a formal living room, velvet or leather might be the way to go.
Performance Fabric The durable fabric withstands spills, stains, and high traffic, ensuring long-term comfort and unmatched durability.
Velvet Upholstery For a touch of luxury, opt for a chair with velvet upholstery. The Jolene chair, for example, features bold velvet fabric and red iron legs, making it a standout piece in any room.
Measuring Your Space
Before committing to a chair, ensure you measure your space accurately. Consider the chair's dimensions, including seat height, depth, and arm height, to ensure it fits comfortably in your room and how you want to use it.
Chairs are more than just seating; they're statement pieces that can spark conversations.
Whether it's the sculptural design of the Edgar Lounge chair or the retro aesthetics of the Noelle chair, each piece adds personality and charm to your space.
Start focusing on shape, select the upholstery that is correct for your use, look for details that spark joy, and comfort choices, you can find the perfect chair that blends style and functionality. Don't forget to measure your space and consider the chair's usage to ensure it meets your needs and enhances your home's aesthetic.
